Labs of Contextualized Urban Social Work

Location is key. To make sure residents will show up to community meetings, the location should be accessible, well known and in the project neighbourhood.

Timing is another very important aspect. Residents often work during school hours. This might mean students will have to come to the neighbourhood outside of school hours, in the evening or late afternoon. 

Who to invite? Send out your invitations well in advance, at least one month before the date, with a reminder after two weeks and another one a week and a day before. Use as many different channels as possible; WhatsApp, Flyers and Posters at the community centre, social media, personal invites, newsletters and/or email.

Although its not necessary to pay residents to show up, a token of appreciation is welcome. Perhaps provide some food and tea and coffee, or even a good conversation can work as a means of exchange for their time.
